This entire video is a lie.
It’s not even my van. I had it in to film a small welding job it needed to get it though the MOT and while it was in it needed two arms for the MOT too so I was just getting them bashed out at the same time and filming it for a bonus video.
The welding job was’nt without complications, I ended up taking parts off of my own van to get it back to him and then spending two days waiting for parts for mine. But that wasn’t the problem.
The problems stared with the drivers side arm. The front bolt had a bend in it somehow and it took all my strength for over an hour to unwind it. You can hear me in the video saying how much of a struggle it was, and how grateful I was to have the passenger side come out ok.
And then it happened. The passenger rear side bolt head snapped off.
OK. I can handle this, I have a stud extractor and stuff, I’ll carry on and then pull it later.
And then the second rear bolt snapped too.
The arm came out, and I started with the stud extractor which broke a tooth. I had the torch on the subframe, I had 800mm breaker bars on the extractors… nothing. The clock was ticking and what was a 2 hours job instantly became an entire weekend.
I gave the owner the keys to my own van to keep him moving and then I cracked on. The left hand side of the subframe came out the van, into the vice, cut smooth and then drilled until i could finally work out the bolts. Frame bracket out to in was around 4 hours.
Because of the timescale and turnaround needed to keep this thing mobile, a large chunk in the middle where it went wrong didn’t get filmed, so the whole failure didnt make the video. Instead the video shows a nice smooth transition from the old arm coming off to the new arm going on, and watchers will never know the real struggle this was – we’ll keep this one as our little secret.
