I’ve been building cars and bikes my whole life and yet never committed to YouTube before despite thinking about it. Inspired by MCM releasing a similar blog post a few years back, here’s why I didn’t do this sooner.

Welcome to SainzFAB – unload the storage and start working.
  1. Space. The majority of my projects have not even been on the drive, but on the road opposite my house. It’s not the place to work on anything long term.
  2. Noise. I was always conscious about running angle grinders and impact drivers with the neighboring houses, stopping me from working late. There’s been times I’ve been sanding dashboards, and running a sander for hours on end is fun for nobody.
  3. Lighting. If the sun started to come down, or it went dark at 3pm in the winter, nothing could be done.
  4. Weather. I’m far too old be to out working in the rain unless I desperately need that vehicle the next day. If that’s the case, I’m not adding the extra time it takes to film it.
  5. Privacy. As a person who is consciously self aware, standing in front of a camera is daunting enough without the added thought that everyone on my street can see me doing it.
  6. Privacy again. Putting my home address on the internet isn’t the cleverest idea when there is a catalogue of videos showing my vehicles and tooling and where it’s kept. Also, people who watch the channel can show up at my shed and that’s not tooo bad, but if they were to show up at my house it would be unnerving.
  7. Mess. My driveway is already stained with oil just from general maintenance, if i was to start doing full time work the mess would be exponential.
  8. Aspiration. All the great YouTube car channels have their own space just for their cars, and all car owners either have it or dream about it.
  9. Scale. Outside on the drive would always be time restricted, I couldn’t take on a full strip down on a rotisserie, most jobs would need to be finished the same day or at least the same weekend.
  10. Storage. Keeping all the parts for these cars while they are ebing worked on needs space I don’t have at home.
  11. Interruptions. There’s a lot of kids on my estate, playing sports and cycling past. There’s dogs, friendly neighbors checking in, my own child wanting something or other. Having my own space gives the ability to focus.

Having this opportunity to take on my unit has opened the opportunity to fully commit to a channel without all of the attached worries, and behind closed doors I can record retake after retake until I get what I want, which is improving every video as my confidence finally starts to grow.

What I would say though, is that if you are also considering starting YouTube, then do the exact opposite. Start today. Pull out your phone right now and start recording. It doesnt even matter if you upload it or not, but the time you spend with your own camera in your face, the time you spend planning a video, writing a script, learning editing and all the rest of the processes that come with video production, start getting involved.

If anyone is reading this at all, or if you support my channel, thank you – it means more than you know.
